Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has received a major boost to his growing national profile following the conferment of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) Award for Distinguished Leadership and Outstanding Contributions to Healthcare Delivery.

The award, presented in Enugu, underscores what stakeholders describe as a sweeping transformation of the state’s health sector under Mbah’s leadership. MHWUN cited landmark achievements, including the construction of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all wards, the near completion of a 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, and the revitalisation of secondary healthcare facilities.

Health workers particularly applauded the full implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), recruitment of over 2,500 personnel, and consistent salary payments—measures that have significantly improved workforce morale and service delivery.

Beyond local commendation, global institutions have also taken notice. The World Health Organization has praised Mbah’s investments, describing his approach as a model for achieving universal health coverage through strengthened primary healthcare systems. Likewise, the United Kingdom’s FCDO has supported the state with equipment and training, citing his “bold and strategic” health sector reforms.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mbah revealed that over 50 percent of Enugu’s budgets in the past three years have been committed to health and education, an intentional strategy to build human capital and drive economic growth.

With ongoing digitisation of health facilities, expansion of hospitals, and aggressive investment in preventive care, Enugu is fast emerging as a healthcare benchmark in Nigeria, cementing Mbah’s reputation as a reform-driven leader reshaping public health delivery.

Further underscoring his vision, the governor has approved the recruitment of thousands of health workers, upgraded training institutions, and commenced the construction of a 300-bed international hospital in Enugu, moves aimed at curbing medical tourism and strengthening local capacity.

Beyond infrastructure, Mbah’s reforms include digitizing patient care systems and expanding health insurance coverage, ensuring affordability and efficiency in service delivery.

Indeed, Governor Mbah’s proactive and results-driven leadership continues to redefine governance in Enugu, with his healthcare revolution standing as a proof to his commitment to the well-being of the people.
