Over the weekend, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike was met with chants of “we are hungry” from residents of Abuja as he urged them not to participate in the planned August 1 protests against economic difficulties. The video, which emerged on social media, depicts Wike trying to calm an upset crowd, asking them to support the government despite the ongoing economic issues.
- In the footage, Wike is shown addressing the residents, who frequently interrupt his speech with chants of “We are hungry.”
“I’m begging you all,” Wike pleaded as the crowd’s cries persisted.
“Hunger has existed for some time now. Our role is to support the government’s success. I understand the suffering you’re enduring. It’s your sacrifice for the country.”
He continued, “I know the president. Please be patient. Hope is returning. This hunger will ease soon. I have faith in Tinubu’s government.”
The minister’s plea comes as anticipation rises for the nationwide protests set for August 1-10, which are being organized in response to the escalating cost of living and economic struggles faced by many Nigerians.
Earlier, Wike had issued a stern warning against protests in Abuja, declaring the FCT “unavailable for protests.”
In light of the increasing unrest, President Bola Tinubu has enlisted clerics, religious groups, and traditional rulers to persuade citizens to avoid participating in the protests.
