“Yemi My Lover Accuses Olamide of Using His Film Without Kudos or Compensation”

Yoruba actor and producer Ayebo Yemi Solomon—popularly known as “Yemi My Lover”—has publicly accused Nigerian music star Olamide of appropriating both the title and inspiration of his classic movie Yemi My Lover without seeking permission or giving credit.

In a candid interview, Solomon expressed disappointment that Olamide never reached out to him directly. Although he was pleased to see his film’s title used in Olamide’s 2013 hit single “Yemi Lover,” the actor felt that the musician should have at least made contact or offered acknowledgment when the song and its video were released. “I was happy—yet not happy,” Solomon admitted. “When the video dropped, I was expecting a call, at least a feature. I tried to see him, but it didn’t work.”

Beyond the perceived slight, Solomon is also raising concerns over his own financial wellbeing. He revealed that despite producing over 17 films in the 1990s and early 2000s, he made little to no profit due to rampant piracy. Solomon estimates that as much as 90 percent of the revenue from his works was lost to illegal distribution, leaving him deeply in debt and unable to provide for basic needs: “I ran into debt and even sold my land in Ajah to survive,” he confirmed.

Despite the emotional weight of his grievances, Solomon clarified he has no intentions to take Olamide to court. He described the rapper’s homage as flattering but insisted it would have been more respectful to involve him personally or professionally in the project.

Earlier coverage highlighted that Solomon’s financial trials stem not only from piracy but also limited promotional reach during the pre-digital era, which prevented his films from generating sustainable income. He emphasized: “I didn’t make money from it because 90 percent of the money went to pirates.”
