The US Congress has passed a law requiring companies to prove that goods imported from China’s Xinjiang region were not produced with forced labour. The US has accused China of genocide in its suppression of the Muslim-dominated Uyghur minority there – a charge China has repeatedly denied.
The bill has been criticized by major companies doing business in the area, including Coca-Cola, Nike and Apple and also lack of support from the White House. It was approved by the Senate on Thursday by the vote of every member of Congress except one.
The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, as it is officially known, is now headed to President Joe Biden’s desk for signature into law. For months the White House avoided taking a stand on the legislation, but earlier this week press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden would sign it.
