In a powerful display of military strength, the United States recently dispatched nuclear-capable bombers to the Korean Peninsula. The move comes as a response to North Korea’s large-scale anti-U.S. demonstrations held in its capital just days ago.
In a show of military strength aimed at North Korea, the United States deployed long-range B-52 bombers for joint aerial drills over the Korean Peninsula, accompanied by fighter jets from the US and South Korea. This move comes just days after North Korea organized large-scale anti-US rallies in its capital city.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed the participation of the B-52 bombers in a statement, highlighting that these temporary deployments of strategic assets are in response to North Korea’s ongoing efforts to expand its nuclear arsenal. The US recently dispatched a nuclear-powered submarine, capable of carrying approximately 150 Tomahawk missiles, to South Korean waters for the first time in six years. This deployment coincided with North Korea resuming missile tests as a form of protest against perceived invasion rehearsals conducted by the US and South Korea.
The South Korean Defense Ministry emphasized that the deployment of the B-52 bombers serves to increase the visibility of US strategic assets in the region. Both countries are determined to strengthen their joint defense postures, as demonstrated through ongoing joint drills involving US strategic bombers.
On the 73rd anniversary of the start of the Korean War, Pyongyang witnessed mass rallies involving over 120,000 North Koreans. During these gatherings, officials and residents delivered speeches, pledging “merciless revenge” against the United States for its role in the war and accusing the US of planning an invasion of North Korea.
It is worth noting that the Korean War ended with an armistice, leaving the peninsula technically in a state of war. To deter potential aggression from North Korea, the US maintains around 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea.
Following the launch of two short-range ballistic missiles on June 15th, North Korea has refrained from conducting further public weapons tests. However, the deployment of US bombers could potentially provoke North Korea to resume weapons testing as a form of protest.
The increased visibility of US strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula was an agreed-upon measure between US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol during their summit in Washington in April. President Biden explicitly stated that any nuclear attack by North Korea against the US or its allies would result in the end of the regime responsible.
North Korea has conducted over 100 missile tests since the beginning of 2022 in an effort to expand its arsenal of nuclear-capable missiles capable of targeting the US mainland and South Korea. In response, the US and South Korea have expanded their military exercises.
In late May, North Korea’s attempt to launch a rocket carrying its first spy satellite ended in failure, with the rocket plunging into the sea shortly after liftoff. Despite this setback, North Korea has repeatedly expressed its intention to make a second launch, emphasizing the importance of establishing a space-based surveillance system to counter what it perceives as US hostility.
