Donald Trump’s son sent a panicky text to the White House chief-of-staff calling for his father to intervene during the Capitol riots on January 6.

A committee investigating the violence showed a message from Donald Trump Jr to Mark Meadows, saying the deadly riots were “out of control”. He is one of several senior political and media figures to message Meadows with their concerns. The president was criticized for not intervening early in the riots.

He finally urged his supporters to “go home”, but not before pro-Trump mobs stormed the Capitol building, where Congress is meeting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. In a newly revealed message to Meadows, Trump Jr. used strong terms to suggest his father should act. “He should condemn this nonsense ASAP,” the younger Trump wrote, according to US lawmaker Liz Cheney, vice chair of the committee investigating whether the former president had any prior knowledge of the incident.

The former president has repeatedly denied suggestions that he encouraged his supporters to act violently.
