During a period when Nigerians were collectively striving to showcase the country’s brand on the global stage, destiny placed me in the spotlight alongside my brother, Mikel Obi. While Mikel was thriving in football, I was receiving recognition for pushing Afrobeats to the world.
At that time, Mikel was at the center of a major debate between two top football clubs—Manchester United and Chelsea. He was adored by football fans, just as I was embraced by music lovers for my contribution to the Nigerian music industry. We were two kings in our respective fields, thriving and living our best lives.
One day, during a trip to the U.K., I ran into Mikel at a shopping mall while I was out buying things for myself and Annie. Excited to see him for the first time in person, I approached him with open arms, ready to embrace my brother, having admired his work on TV for years.
To my shock, Mikel completely ignored me, acting like he didn’t know who I was. I was deeply hurt and tried to figure out if I had ever wronged him in any way. The situation gained attention when Linda Ikeji and other popular blogs reported it, yet Mikel never offered an apology.
That painful experience led me to pour my emotions into the song “Only Me”.
As I said in the song, “I know say no be everybody sabi play ball, but arise o compatriots if Nigeria call.”
