The Enugu State Government has unveiled plans to construct Nigeria’s longest canopy walkway and the nation’s first full-scale zipline, aiming to boost tourism and draw more visitors to the South-East. These projects are central to the state’s eco-tourism development strategy and will be executed in phases, beginning this year.
Dame Ugochi Madueke, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, disclosed these initiatives following an Executive Council meeting, as announced by Dan Nwomeh, the Governor’s media aide. Madueke emphasized that these investments are designed to highlight Enugu’s natural beauty while providing visitors with distinctive and memorable experiences.
The planned 600-meter canopy walkway will be located at the Nsude Pyramid site, making it the longest in Nigeria once completed. Additionally, a 300-meter zipline will be set up at Ngwo Pine Forest, establishing Enugu as the first state in the country to offer a full-scale zipline tourism experience.
“We will implement the projects in phases. In the first phase, we will focus on Awhum Waterfall and Nsude Pyramid, where the canopy walkway, measuring around 600 meters, will be the longest in Nigeria. We are also developing Ngwo Pine Forest with a 300-meter zipline, the first of its kind in the country,” Madueke explained.
Further plans include enhancing Awhum Waterfall with an additional canopy walkway and a boardwalk, creating a more immersive experience while maintaining the area’s ecological balance.
The government also intends to construct the Cross of Hope at Okpatu, a towering structure standing 580 meters above sea level, crowned with a 50-meter-high cross. This landmark will feature 15 floors and an elevator, reaching a total height of 630 meters above sea level.
Dame Madueke also highlighted other upcoming projects, such as the Akwuke/Atakkwu Waterpark and the Ovu Lake Golf and Resort at Akpawfu. These sites will feature experience centers, food courts, and renewable energy facilities, promoting sustainability and tourism.
Moreover, to mark International Youth Day on August 12, the state government will empower over 2,100 trained youths, equipping them with essential skills for their future, according to the statement.
