Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Ms. Onyeka Onwenu has passed away.
Ms. Onwenu reportedly died Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing while performing at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday party.
An eyewitness present at the party confirmed the tragic news to TheNiche.
“It’s very sad. Onyeka Onwenu had just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after her performance, she collapsed.
“She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, but she didn’t survive,” an unnamed eyewitness told the newspaper.
Born on January 31, 1952, the late singer, who transitioned into a politician and rights activist and was affectionately called “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, once served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
In 2013, she was appointed as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Born on January 31, 1952, the late singer, who also became a politician and rights activist, was known as “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian media. She previously held the position of chairperson for the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
In 2013, she was named the Executive Director and CEO of the National Centre for Women Development.
