Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed the Labor Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as his preferred candidate for the 2023 elections.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
In the 2023 New Year message signed by the former president and made available to journalists by his assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo described Obi as his apprentice and said that the former Anambra state governor had an advantage in the 2023 elections.
Obasanjo said: “ None of the contestants is a saint, but when one compares his character, background, understanding, knowledge, discipline and vitality they can bring and the great efforts necessary to stay focused on work, particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience in the work that I personally had, Peter Obi as an apprentice has an advantage.
“ Others, like all of us, have what they can collectively contribute to the new dispensation for the liberation, restoration and salvation of Nigeria.
“ Another important point to note about Peter is that it is a needle with threads joined from the north and south and may not be lost.

“ In other words, you have people who can pull your ears, if necessary, and when necessary. He has a young and capable running mate with a clean record of achievement in both public and private life ”.
The letter said in part: “ I am forced to write this letter to all Nigerians, especially young Nigerians, friends of Nigeria worldwide, as well as our development partners due to the seriousness, responsibility and implications of the collective decision that Nigerians, both young and old, will make and will be doing in the next two months.

“ The past seven and a half years have undoubtedly been hectic and stressful years for many Nigerians. We have passed from the frying pan to the fire and from the top of the mountain to the valley.
“ Our leaders have done their best, but their best effort turned out not to be the best for Nigeria and Nigerians at home and abroad. For most Nigerians, it was hell on earth.
“ Those of us who are alive must thank God for his mercies, prepare for the remaining months of this administration, and pray and work very hard for a better immediate future: a future of liberation, restoration and great hope and expectation.
“ We have had activists touring the entire country feeding on what they mean and what they don’t want to say, what they understand and what they don’t fully understand, what is possible and what is not possible, what is realistic and what is unreal, what is true and what is not true. I think we should not be confused or gullible. Let’s be cautious, so as not to be fooled again.
“ I have interacted with the main contenders and I find it interesting that, in one way or another, each of them claims to want to do what I did during my presidency and take Nigeria to where I was at the height of my Presidency and immediately afterwards.
“ It hurt me that most of them did not realize that Nigeria today had been dragged far below Nigeria from the beginning of my presidency in June nineteen ninety six.
