Tension is running high at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) following reports that a female PhD student was allegedly abducted while jogging on campus during her regular morning routine.
The incident came to light through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @theoriaku, who described the victim as a close friend and a postgraduate student at the university.
According to his account, the abduction took place in the early hours of the day while the student was out for her usual morning jog within the university premises. He further claimed that the kidnappers have reached out to the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of ₦10 million for her release.
“My friend, a PhD student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, was kidnapped this morning while jogging inside the school,” he wrote. He also criticized the university’s security unit for showing little interest in the matter, saying, “We’ve reported the issue to the school security, but they seem indifferent. Meanwhile, the kidnappers are asking for ₦10 million.”
The alarming development has sparked concern and outrage among students, staff, and members of the public, especially over the issue of campus safety.
As of the time this report was filed, neither the university administration nor the police had released an official statement about the incident.
There are growing calls for immediate action from university authorities and security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the kidnapped student and to strengthen security measures on campus to prevent future incidents.
