The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide community has been left in shock and sadness upon learning about the untimely demise of Professor Joe Ogbonna Irukwu, a shining star and highly esteemed figure. Regarded as an accomplished legal luminary, moral edifice, insurance and risk management wizard, erudite scholar, Igbo leader, and former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Professor Irukwu’s passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
Serving as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo from 2003 to 2007, Irukwu left an indelible mark during his tenure, infusing the Igbo umbrella socio-cultural organization with vibrancy, intellect, and panache. His contributions included the publication of the widely acclaimed intellectual masterpiece, “Nation Building and Ethnic Organization: A Case Study of Ohanaeze in Nigeria,” which captivated the scholarly community upon its release in 2007.
In addition to his intellectual prowess, Irukwu also displayed exceptional leadership and vision. Under his guidance, a magnificent multi-million naira complex comprising a 1,500-seater auditorium, library, and conference room was commissioned, standing as a testament to his commitment to securing equitable recognition and accommodation for the Igbo people within the Nigerian polity.
Throughout his career, Professor Irukwu showcased remarkable social skills, wisdom, and organizational acumen, particularly in navigating the political intrigues that arose during his tenure as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. His ability to weather such challenges with poise and foresight is fondly remembered by those who witnessed his remarkable strength of character.
Before his appointment as President General, Irukwu had already achieved significant milestones in both the private and public sectors of Nigeria’s economy. Despite being tempted to join partisan politics by Dr. M. I Okpara, the then Premier of the Eastern Region, Irukwu remained committed to his vision of contributing to the development of Nigeria’s insurance industry. His dedication and expertise in risk management earned him widespread recognition as a leading authority in the field, with numerous academic accolades, fellowships, and awards to his name.
Expressing his deep sorrow, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, CFR (Ahaejiagamba), lamented the loss of a truly remarkable individual. Describing Irukwu as a man of great integrity, kindness, and exceptional public relations skills, Iwuanyanwu emphasized the immeasurable impact Irukwu had on Ohanaeze Ndigbo. He expressed regret over the loss of Irukwu’s wise counsel during a time when it is most needed.
On behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and all the structures of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, heartfelt condolences have been extended to Professor Irukwu’s immediate family, the government, and the people of Abia State. May Professor Joe Ogbonna Irukwu find eternal rest in the embrace of the Almighty, and may his family find solace and strength in this irreparable loss.
