Abuja, June 11, 2025 — Former Anambra governor and Labour Party leader Peter Obi has raised concerns about the federal government’s decision to allocate ₦39 billion for the extensive renovation of Abuja’s International Conference Centre (ICC), arguing that the funds could be better directed toward more pressing developmental needs.
The renovation project—overseen by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under Minister Nyesom Wike—has reached approximately 70–80% completion, with the facility expected to reopen in May alongside President Tinubu’s second-year inauguration . Obi, however, contends that such large expenditures on infrastructural aesthetics amount to misplaced priorities.
He urged the government to focus on existing infrastructure and human-centered development, especially as many Nigerians continue to struggle with unemployment, insecurity, and limited access to basic amenities. Obi cited that ₦39 billion could have paid over 500,000 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members their full, new monthly allowance .
Obi’s remarks mirror public skepticism, prompting opposition groups—like the African Action Congress—to call for probe into the renovation costs and demand transparent disclosure of contractors, expenses, and procurement terms .
The FCTA has defended the expenditure, stating that revamping the ICC to international standards will enhance Nigeria’s global standing and drive long-term economic benefits .
