Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles proved their mettle in an electrifying encounter today, defeating Ghana’s Black Galaxies 3-1 in Uyo. This remarkable victory not only showcased Nigeria’s dominance but also secured their qualification for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Eagles began the match with precision and energy, opening the scoring in the 19th minute. Ismaila Sodiq latched onto a brilliant long pass, outpacing the Ghanaian defense to slot home the first goal. Just three minutes later, team captain Nduka Junior added to the tally, taking advantage of a chaotic scramble in the penalty area to deliver a powerful close-range finish.
By the 25th minute, the CHAN Eagles had established a commanding lead. Saviour, showing remarkable anticipation, intercepted a pass, expertly rounded Ghana’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, and calmly finished into an empty net. The first half ended with Nigeria leading 3-0, leaving the Black Galaxies with an uphill battle.
In the second half, Ghana attempted to turn the tide, and their resilience paid off in the 73rd minute when Stephen Amankona scored a consolation goal. Despite their efforts, the Black Galaxies couldn’t overcome Nigeria’s commanding performance.
This victory cements Nigeria’s place in the CHAN tournament scheduled for February 2025, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Meanwhile, Ghana, who reached the quarter-finals in the previous edition, will unfortunately miss out on the competition this time.
