On May 10, 2025, Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso was arrested in East London, South Africa, for immigration violations. Authorities allege that Omotoso remained in the country unlawfully after his visa appeal was denied, rendering his presence illegal.
Omotoso, leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church, had previously faced serious charges, including rape and human trafficking. However, on April 2, 2025, he was acquitted of all 32 charges by the Eastern Cape High Court in Gqeberha, citing insufficient evidence presented by the prosecution.

Despite his acquittal, the Department of Home Affairs had earlier declared him a prohibited person, a status that remained unchanged. Following his arrest, Omotoso was detained at the Mdantsane police station, where supporters gathered to pray for his release.
Omotoso is scheduled to appear in court on May 12, 2025, to address the immigration charges on violations. If found guilty, he may face deportation to Nigeria.
