A new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas’ has emerged in Northwestern Nigeria, targeting rural communities, according to the Nigerian military.
The Defence Headquarters stated that the group formed following the recent coup in Niger Republic, which disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. Before the coup, joint operations between the two nations had kept such threats at bay. However, the breakdown in collaboration allowed the group to infiltrate parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states from the Niger and Mali regions.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed that locals initially welcomed the group, mistaking their intentions. He noted that the terrorists exploited unmonitored border areas and complex terrain to spread their ideology. Despite this, Nigerian troops have intensified intelligence and surveillance efforts to track and eliminate the group.
The emergence of ‘Lukarawas’ adds to the list of terror groups, commonly referred to as bandits, active in Northwestern Nigeria. These groups frequently carry out attacks, kidnapping, and ransom demands, terrorizing local communities and travellers.
