The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that drugs and other illicit substances were found during a raid at the residence of Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, representing Kwara South, in Ilorin, Kwara State. This revelation came during a press conference held at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the raid, which occurred in February 2024 at the senator’s GRA residence, led to the arrest of two aides linked to drug-related activities. The agency clarified that the raid was part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
The NDLEA stated that the senator’s recent remarks accusing the agency of corruption were influenced by a personal vendetta stemming from previous encounters. The agency had acted on intelligence reports suggesting that some individuals, allegedly connected to the senator, were involved in illicit drug activities in Offa, Kwara State.
“In June 2023, a raid was conducted on a suspected drug hideout in Offa, resulting in the arrest of one Oluwatosin Odepidan, who was found in possession of methamphetamine and cannabis,” Babafemi explained. “Efforts by the senator’s aide to interfere in the case failed, and the suspect was duly prosecuted. Though he initially jumped bail, he was re-arrested and sentenced in June 2024.”
The NDLEA dismissed the senator’s accusations made during a Senate debate, reaffirming its commitment to its anti-drug mandate and rejecting any claims of compromise. The agency emphasized its resolve to continue dismantling drug networks nationwide, including any linked to prominent figures.
