Nationwide Protests Sweep Nigeria as Economic Hardships Intensify

Nigeria is currently experiencing widespread protests as citizens express their anger and frustration over worsening economic conditions, including high fuel prices and rising costs of living. The demonstrations, which began in early October, have been gaining strength, with participants rallying under the #FearlessInOctober hashtag. Many protesters are now referring to the movement as a fight for “National Survival,” emphasizing the struggle to cope with the economic situation.

The protests are taking place in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos, where citizens are demanding swift government action to address the economic crisis. The removal of fuel subsidies has led to a sharp rise in petrol prices, which now range from ₦1,030 to ₦1,100 per litre, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford transportation and essential goods.

In Abuja, protestors gathered at key locations like Utako Market to voice their grievances, while in Lagos, demonstrators convened at the Ikeja Underbridge, carrying placards with messages calling for the government to lower petrol prices and tackle the escalating cost of living.
The growing unrest reflects deep dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly over economic policies that critics say have failed to ease the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

Concerns over governance and accountability have also emerged, with demonstrators calling for a reversal of recent electricity tariff increases and improved living standards. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s fuel supply landscape is undergoing a shift as the newly operational Dangote Refinery aims to reduce dependence on imported petrol. Despite this, petrol imports dropped to around 570,000 barrels in mid-October, compared to the previous weekly average of 1.3 million barrels, raising questions about the refinery’s ability to meet the nation’s immediate fuel needs.

As the protests continue, the government faces mounting pressure to take urgent steps to address the economic challenges and restore public confidence. The situation remains dynamic, with citizens eagerly awaiting a response to their demands for relief and stability.
