Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered another collapse on Monday evening, plunging the country into darkness. The incident occurred around 6:18 pm, with power generation dropping drastically from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to 3.56GW by 6 pm, and reaching zero by 7 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid failure, citing a “general system collapse” at 6:48 pm on October 14, 2024. As a result, power supply was disrupted across the EEDC network, affecting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. The company indicated that it was awaiting further updates from the National Control Centre in Osogbo.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company reported a power outage due to the grid collapse, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore supply in its coverage areas once the grid stabilizes.
The latest grid collapse highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining a stable electricity supply across the country.
