A lawmaker from Abia State, Obi Aguocha, representing the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, has visited Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The visit occurred on Thursday, October 24, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to seek a political resolution regarding Kanu’s detention. Kanu was arrested on June 27, 2021, in Kenya and later extradited to Nigeria, where he faces charges including terrorism, treasonable felony, and inciting violence through his Radio Biafra.
A statement from Aguocha’s media team noted that Kanu’s legal team had recently contacted him about their difficulties in accessing their client. The statement said, “A few days ago, the lawyers for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu reached out to Hon. Obi Aguocha regarding the ongoing challenges they have faced in meeting with their client.”
In response, Aguocha urgently wrote to the Department of State Security and Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, requesting their intervention. The meeting was positive; the DSS explained that the difficulty in accessing Kanu was due to the lawyers requesting the judge to recuse herself, which requires additional legal proceedings known to both parties.
On October 24, 2024, Hon. Aguocha met with Nnamdi Kanu, accompanied by a family member, Ms. Ezioma Stella Ikpo. During their meeting, Aguocha fully updated Kanu on the situation regarding his legal access.
