Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. He began his education at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978, before moving to Government Community Secondary School in Biu from 1978 to 1980. He completed his secondary education at Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum (now in Yobe State) in 1983.
Following his secondary education, Shettima was admitted to the University of Maiduguri, where he studied Agricultural Economics and graduated in 1989. He then served his National Youth Service in Calabar with the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank from 1989 to 1990.
His strong academic performance inspired him to pursue a Master’s degree, and he enrolled at the University of Ibadan, earning his M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics between 1990 and 1991. Despite his brief time in academia, he made a significant impact as a Lecturer II in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri from 1991 to 1993.
Shettima’s banking career began during his National Youth Service when he worked with the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank. In 1993, he joined Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as an Officer and Head of the Accounts Unit at its Ikeja Office in Lagos State, a position he held until 1997.
In response to changing government policies and seeking career advancement, he became Deputy Manager at the African International Bank Limited in Kaduna, where he rose to the position of Manager between 1997 and 2001.
In 2001, he was appointed Deputy Manager and Branch Head of Zenith Bank Plc’s Maiduguri Office. His dedication, strong public relations with staff and customers, and commitment to excellence led to rapid promotions. Within five years, he advanced to Manager, Senior Manager, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East), and ultimately General Manager.
Recognizing his exemplary qualities, Senator (Dr) Ali Modu Sheriff, the Executive Governor of Borno State, invited Shettima to contribute his financial expertise to the state government. In mid-2007, he was unanimously endorsed by the Borno State House of Assembly to serve as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development. He later held various ministerial positions, including Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Health.
Kashim Shettima is happily married and has three children.
