The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has chosen Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new president. He succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a Soil Science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
The decision was reached during the Union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin on Sunday. The election saw Prof. Piwuna competing against Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to credible sources.
Prof. Piwuna assumes leadership amid rising concerns over potential industrial action due to unresolved issues, including the distribution of recently released Earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government and the ongoing brain drain in the sector.
