Sunday Igboho Urges Tinubu to Caution Shettima Over Comments on Kemi Badenoch
Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain Vice President Kashim Shettima from further criticizing Kemi Badenoch, leader of the British Conservative Party.
Igboho’s statement, issued on Sunday in Osogbo, comes in response to Shettima’s remarks about Badenoch following her critical stance on corruption in Nigeria. Badenoch, who identifies as Yoruba, had also dissociated herself from being grouped with northern Nigeria.
In a personally signed press release, Igboho defended Badenoch, stating that she had done no wrong in highlighting corruption’s negative impact on Nigeria’s development or asserting her Yoruba identity. He urged Tinubu, as a Yoruba leader, to caution Shettima against further verbal attacks.
“It is incumbent on President Bola Tinubu to instruct Shettima to focus on his responsibilities as Vice President rather than engaging in unnecessary skirmishes with Badenoch, who merely voiced a candid but truthful perspective on corruption stifling Nigeria’s progress,” Igboho said.
Reflecting on past experiences, Igboho criticized the inconsistency in leadership responses. “Under Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, no one dared attack his Fulani ethnic group without facing severe consequences. Yet, I was persecuted for advocating against the destruction of farmlands and killings by Fulani herdsmen. Security forces raided my home on July 1, 2021, killing two people and arresting others,” he recounted.
He further criticized the Tinubu administration for failing to address the struggles of Nigerians amidst economic hardship, insecurity, and widespread poverty. “Rather than tackling these issues, Vice President Shettima is busy attacking Badenoch for speaking the truth,” Igboho noted.
Igboho concluded by urging Tinubu to bring Shettima to order, emphasizing that the Vice President should prioritize addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges instead of engaging in unproductive disputes.
