The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide, an independent and non-partisan assembly of elders from Nigeria’s 13 Igbo-populated states and the diaspora, has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate dialogues aimed at resolving the escalating insecurity in the Southeast region. In a statement signed by Justice Alpha Ikpeama and Professor Obasi Igwe, UNIEC emphasized that such discussions would not only mark a significant achievement for the President and regional governors but also promote healing, unity, and peace across the Southeast and the entire nation.
UNIEC expressed its intention to assess and reward Southeast governors who demonstrate a commitment to combating the rising insecurity in the region. In line with this, the council has postponed its Igbo Achievers Legacy Award ceremony, originally scheduled for December 2024, to April 23, 2025, to ensure thorough preparations for a successful event.
The Southeast has been grappling with increased violence and instability in recent years. Factors contributing to this unrest include perceived marginalization, economic challenges, and the activities of separatist groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has further intensified tensions, with calls for his release as a gesture towards peace.
UNIEC’s appeal emphasizes the urgency for the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with Southeast leaders and stakeholders. Such engagement is seen as crucial for restoring peace and fostering national reconciliation. The council’s decision to postpone the Legacy Awards reflects its commitment to recognizing leaders who prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents.
UNIEC Worldwide commends President Tinubu’s efforts towards national development and urges a focused approach to resolving the Southeast’s security challenges. The council calls on all parties to collaborate in restoring hope, unity, and prosperity to the region and Nigeria as a whole.
