As Nigeria marks Democracy Day today, June 12, Hon. Engr. Anayo B. Onwuegbu FNSE, representing the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives extends heartfelt greetings and solemn reflections to his constituents and the greater community of Greater Awgu.

 This day, which commemorates the pivotal June 12, 1993 elections, serves as a powerful reminder of the nation’s collective resolve to uphold democratic principles and pursue a prosperous future.

In his Democracy Day message, Hon. Onwuegbu emphasized the historical significance of June 12, a day when Nigerians united to assert the power of their vote, transcending tribal, religious, and sectional divides. He lauded the resilience and sacrifices of those who championed democracy, particularly honoring the legacy of MKO Abiola, whose victory in the 1993 elections symbolized the nation’s democratic aspirations.

“Today is a reminder of the resilience and sacrifices made for the democracy we cherish today,” Hon. Onwuegbu stated. “On June 12, 1993, Nigerians voted willingly and openly for MKO Abiola to be their President and for Democratic Governance… The annulment of this aspiration has remained our bane in the march towards greatness.”

Hon. Onwuegbu urged his constituents to honour the memory of those who fought for Nigeria’s freedoms by recommitting to the principles of universal sovereignty, justice, equity, and good governance. He assured them of his firm dedication to ensuring that the dividends of democracy are accessible to every citizen within his constituency.
