Gov. Mbah’s Development Drive: Enugu State to Build 300-Bed International Hospital, Implement Geographic Information System

As part of his campaign promises Gov. Peter Mbah as part of his campaign promises has taken  a bold move to reverse the trend of medical tourism and establish Enugu State as a prime location for business, investment, tourism, and quality living.

The governor has unveiled plans to construct a 300-bed ultramodern quaternary health facility, named the Enugu International Hospital. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, followed a recent Executive Council (EXCO) meeting presided over by Governor Peter Mbah.

Prof. Obi emphasized the transformative impact the Enugu International Hospital will have on the state’s healthcare landscape. “Tomorrow is finally here in the health sector,” he said, highlighting that the new hospital will offer not only primary, secondary, and tertiary care but also quaternary healthcare. This advanced level of medicine, which includes highly specialized services not widely available, will soon be accessible to residents and visitors of Enugu.

Located strategically on Rangers Avenue in the heart of Enugu city, the hospital will be easily accessible from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, making it a convenient destination for both local and international patients. The facility aims to provide top-notch medical services, including research and training, thereby eliminating the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for advanced medical care. “It will be the type of hospital that people will no longer have any reason to leave the shores of Nigeria for,” Prof. Obi stated.

Governor Mbah’s administration is also taking proactive measures to address public health concerns. At the same EXCO meeting, discussions were held on strategies to combat the Mpox disease, previously known as Monkeypox, which has become a significant international health concern. The government has directed an increased awareness campaign and is working closely with health sector players, including the Port Health Services at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, to ensure effective surveillance, control, and prevention of the disease. Prof. Obi reassured residents that the state is committed to keeping them safe and minimizing exposure to Mpox.

In addition to its healthcare initiatives, the Enugu State Government is making significant strides in land administration. The government announced the formation of a broad-based committee to expedite the implementation of the Enugu State Geographic Information System (GIS) Services Law 2024. This innovative move is designed to digitize land administration in the state, enhancing the value of landholding and making property transactions more efficient.

Dr. Kingsley Udeh, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, explained the benefits of the GIS initiative, stating that it would revolutionize the way land is managed in Enugu State. “The era of applying for a Certificate of Occupancy and waiting months for it to be processed will soon be a thing of the past,” he noted. The new system promises to handle all aspects of land administration digitally and electronically, using high-end technology to streamline processes and reduce delays.

This initiative aligns with Governor Mbah’s broader vision to boost Enugu State’s economy by transforming landholding and administration, improving data management, and ultimately increasing the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. “All these efforts are geared towards the Governor’s vision to eradicate poverty and drive sustainable economic growth,” Udeh added.
