The Tinubu-led FEC has approved ₦4.5 billion for HIV treatment packs to support Nigerians with HIV/AIDS.
This follows the U.S. government’s emergency waiver reversing a funding freeze imposed under former President Trump, which had threatened global HIV treatment programs, including in Nigeria.
PEPFAR, which funds 90% of Nigeria’s HIV treatment, was affected but resumed after pressure from health groups. Despite this, NACA stresses the need for stronger domestic funding to reduce reliance on foreign aid.
With over $6 billion in past PEPFAR support, Nigeria’s new funding move signals a commitment to sustaining HIV treatment and achieving the 2030 AIDS-free goal.
