Determined to raise safety standards in Nigeria’s booming solar energy sector, Dr. Enukora Joe Okoli, Chairman of the Solar Power Training Centre (SPTC) in Abuja, has lauded the recent certification of 50 solar technicians. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), aims to mitigate the risks associated with uncertified solar installations.

Dr. Okoli, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s energy landscape, emphasized the dangers posed by untrained solar installers. “Engaging uncertified technicians not only violates electricity regulations but also endangers lives and properties,” he stated. His leadership in this endeavor reflects a broader commitment to professionalizing the solar industry and safeguarding communities.

The training, held on May 5th and 6th, 2025, marks the first batch under this vital initiative. Representatives from the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), and NEMSA formed the panel of examiners, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of the candidates’ competencies.

Engr. Aliyu Tukur Tahir, MD/CEO of NEMSA, commended the program, urging Nigerians to comply with mandatory electricity regulations. “Certified installations are crucial for safety and reliability,” he noted.

SPTC coordinators, Engrs. Emmanuel Effiong and Suraj Shittu, announced plans to conduct these training sessions bi-monthly, aiming to produce thousands of certified professionals to meet the growing demand in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.

Dr. Okoli’s untiring dedication to elevating industry standards and protecting citizens underscores his pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.
