This historic announcement unfolded in a setting of reverence and commemoration at the grand Ochendo International Conference Centre in Umuahia. The distinguished President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo, was the embodiment of leadership par excellence as he took the stage and made the historic pronouncement.

Professor Joe Irukwu, whose roots extended to Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, was more than just a prominent personality in Nigeria’s insurance sector. He had also served as the former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a pivotal position within the Igbo community.

With eloquence and firm conviction, Chief Iwuanyanwu led a powerful delegation from Ohanaeze, capturing the essence of the late Professor Irukwu’s profound influence on the Igbo people. Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, a stalwart figure who had shared more than five decades of companionship with Irukwu, took to the podium to deliver a touching eulogy. He accentuated Irukwu’s pioneering impact on the insurance industry and his unwavering commitment to the vision of a unified Nigeria that caters to all its citizens. Chief Ugochukwu also graciously acknowledged the late Professor’s pivotal role in the formation of the Abia Elders Council.

In a profound gesture of respect, Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, paid his heartfelt tributes. He hailed Irukwu as a legendary figure, ensuring that his legacy would continue to endure. In his message, he extended condolences to the grieving family and encouraged them to preserve the noble legacy left behind by their late father.

Dr. Uche Ogah, the former Minister for Mines and Steel Development, praised Irukwu as an exceptional Abian who had excelled in multiple domains. He recognized that Irukwu’s passing marked the conclusion of an era and issued a challenge to Igbo leaders to emulate his sterling example.

Professor Greg Ibe, a member of Imeobi Ohanaeze and the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), lamented the loss of Irukwu and other prominent Igbo figures. He celebrated Irukwu’s immeasurable contributions to the development of Igbo land and called on governments to honor his legacy with a landmark project of strategic importance.

In a spiritually resonant sermon titled “Good Name is Better than Wealth,” Bishop Sunday Onuoha delivered a powerful message on the significance of leaving behind a legacy of integrity. He extolled Professor Irukwu for creating, preserving, and leaving behind a name of great honor.
