State lawmakers gave the approval Monday afternoon after impeaching Rauf Olaniyan as the state’s deputy governor.
Olaniyan was charged by lawmakers with allegations of misconduct.
The decision to indict him was made after lawmakers presented and considered the recommendation of the seven-man panel set up by Chief Judge Munta Abimbola to investigate him on allegations of serious misconduct and abuse of authority.
Impeachment according to the assembly takes effect immediately.
According to the committee’s report presented during Monday’s plenary session by House Majority Leader Hon Sanjo Adedoyin, the seven-man panel found the deputy governor guilty of all the allegations against him.
The 23 PDP lawmakers in the plenary voted in favor of the panel’s recommendations.
The investigative panel was set up last week to investigate at least five allegations contained in a petition against Olaniyan.
Olaniyan had been elected to office in 2019 with Governor Seyi Makinde under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, but had a fight with the governor eventually.
This year, the differences between the two men and their working relationship deteriorated and became virtually irreconcilable when the Deputy Governor left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress.
