The Anambra State Police Command has announced a partial restriction on vehicular movement across the state as part of security measures for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit. This decision was disclosed in a brief statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to Ikenga, “The Anambra State Police Command, on behalf of other security agencies, requests the continued cooperation of Ndi Anambra as they welcome His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the state today, May 8, 2025.” He further clarified, “As a result, there will be a partial adjustment of vehicular movements within the state. We appeal for your understanding.”
The police command also urged residents to remain calm and supportive during the high-profile visit, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining public safety.
“The Command encourages the good people of Anambra to remain law-abiding and continue to collaborate with the Police and other security agencies in ensuring the state’s safety,” Ikenga added.
President Tinubu’s visit is expected to include the commissioning of major infrastructure projects and engagements with political and community leaders. However, the visit takes place amid heightened security concerns following recent violent incidents and attacks by unidentified gunmen in Anambra and the broader South-East region, causing anxiety among residents.
Authorities have attributed the rising insecurity in the region to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group banned under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. However, IPOB has consistently denied involvement in any criminal activities in the South-East or elsewhere in Nigeria.
In response to the escalating security challenges, the Anambra State government and security agencies have intensified joint operations, including targeted raids on suspected criminal hideouts and increased patrols in identified hotspots.
