A Nigerian RCCG pastor was reportedly arrested abroad for addressing an audience as “ladies and gentlemen”, sparking controversy over free speech, cultural sensitivity, and inclusivity.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has expressed deep concerns about the growing acceptance of unconventional lifestyles and values in contemporary society. During a recent sermon at the RCCG Throne of Grace in Lagos, Adeboye cited several instances of moral decline, which he believes are indicative of the approaching end times.

One such instance was the arrest of one of his pastors abroad for simply greeting a group as “ladies and gentlemen.” This seemingly innocuous remark was deemed discriminatory in the country where the pastor was serving, as it did not account for other gender identities recognized there. Adeboye expressed dismay at this development, viewing it as a sign of the increasing intolerance for traditional values in modern society.

Adeboye also shared a troubling anecdote about a woman who referred to her dog as her husband. When questioned about her spouse, the woman replied, “I took him to the vet before coming. He doesn’t talk.” This story, Adeboye suggested, illustrates the blurring of moral lines in contemporary society, where traditional notions of marriage and family are being increasingly challenged.

The RCCG General Overseer warned his congregation to remain committed to their faith and not be swayed by secular values. He emphasized that Jesus’ return is imminent, and believers must be prepared to stand firm in their convictions. Adeboye urged his followers to take this matter seriously, to avoid compromising their values, and to remain focused on their spiritual goals.

In a related matter, Adeboye reiterated his disapproval of certain fashion trends among church workers. Specifically, he criticized men who wear braided hair and women who use false eyelashes and heavy makeup. During the RCCG’s 72nd annual convention in August, Adeboye made it clear that these styles would no longer be allowed on RCCG altars, emphasizing the importance of modesty and humility in the worship of God.

Adeboye’s comments reflect a broader concern among some Christian leaders about the erosion of traditional values in modern society. While some may view his views as conservative or outdated, others see them as a necessary call to action for believers to re-examine their priorities and values in light of their faith.
