Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai, have declared their intent to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the upcoming 2027 elections. The trio voiced their concerns during a public lecture in Abuja, commemorating Amaechi’s 60th birthday.
Atiku criticized the current government, alleging that it is exacerbating poverty to maintain control over the populace. He emphasized the need for a unified opposition to prevent further economic decline under Tinubu’s leadership.
Echoing Atiku’s sentiments, Amaechi revealed that he had previously declined to support Tinubu’s 2023 presidential bid, citing doubts about his capability to lead effectively. He stressed the urgency for the opposition to collaborate in order to address the nation’s challenges.
El-Rufai, who had initially supported Tinubu in 2023, expressed regret over his decision, describing the current administration as one dominated by “urban bandits.” He called for a coalition to restore the country’s trajectory.
The event also featured remarks from other political figures, including former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, who cautioned against repeating past political missteps. Dickson referred to the coalition’s previous efforts in 2015, which led to the ousting of then-President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that the anticipated improvements did not materialize.
As the 2027 elections approach, these developments signal a potential realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, with opposition leaders seeking to form a formidable front against the incumbent administration.
