Former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West), Salihu Lukman, has warned that Nigeria could end up with even worse leaders if President Bola Tinubu is defeated in the 2027 elections.
Lukman emphasized that the real challenge is not just removing Tinubu but ensuring that whoever succeeds him works to meet the expectations of Nigerians. He cautioned against focusing solely on defeating the APC, urging citizens to think beyond party politics and consider the long-term impact of leadership choices.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Lukman questioned the benefits of power shifts in Nigeria’s political history, arguing that past administrations did not significantly improve the lives of citizens in their respective regions. He pointed out that despite former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, the South-West had little to show for it. Similarly, he argued that the South-South under former President Goodluck Jonathan and the North under former Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari did not experience substantial development.
Lukman expressed concerns about the opposition’s approach, warning that many displaced politicians are more focused on seizing power than implementing real change. He feared that if a new opposition party emerges, it might become dysfunctional, controlled by a few powerful individuals who would handpick candidates and party leaders without addressing the deeper issues of governance.
He also alleged that a faction linked to former President Buhari is already attempting to dominate the new opposition party by manipulating media narratives. However, he criticized these politicians for failing to acknowledge their weak electoral prospects and lack of public support.
His statement sparked controversy, with social media users accusing him of supporting Tinubu’s leadership and contributing to Nigeria’s political challenges. Some critics even called for his arrest, blaming him for the country’s struggles.
