Heavy protests have erupted in Enugu, led by angry residents and relatives of Igbo Jah, a local musician who was murdered by a police inspector from the Enugu State Police Command’s anti-cult unit.
Reports indicate that hundreds of residents marched to the anti-cult headquarters, attempting to set the facility on fire but were met with resistance from police officers. In response, protesters have blocked roads in various parts of the state capital, including Onu Asata, where they are burning tires and chanting protest songs. Enugu police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the killing of the talented ogene singer, stating that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and that a comprehensive investigation has been ordered by the state’s Commissioner of Police.
According to Ndukwe, the musician was leaving the Tactical Squad’s headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons that are still unclear, the police officer discharged his weapon, hitting Igbo Jah. Ndukwe’s statement specifies, “A male police inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, known as Igbo Jah. The incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s headquarters. The musician was leaving after a friendly visit when the police officer fired his rifle for reasons yet to be determined. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been sent to the morgue for preservation and autopsy.”
Ndukwe added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID with conducting a thorough investigation to ensure prompt and appropriate disciplinary action against the officer involved.
“The Commissioner expresses sympathy and condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and associates, labeling the incident as unacceptable. He assures that the police officer and anyone else found responsible will face legal consequences to serve as a deterrent. CP Kanayo urges all individuals connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure that justice is achieved,” he stated.
