In a recent development, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide leaders have passionately appealed to the Federal Government for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They believe that Kanu’s freedom holds the key to restoring peace in the Southeast region.

This call was made during the inauguration ceremony of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Women and Youth Wings (FCT chapter) held in Abuja over the weekend.

Representing the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Prof. Charles Nwekeaku asserted that the Southeast urgently requires security and a stable environment. He firmly stated that even with the appointment of 100 service chiefs, peace would remain elusive without the release of Nnamdi Kanu. According to him, Kanu’s freedom is a central and fundamental aspect of the peace-building process in Igbo land.

Furthermore, Iwuanyanwu called upon President Bola Tinubu to abide by the Appeal Court’s judgment, which declared Nnamdi Kanu innocent and absolved him of any wrongdoing.

Highlighting the significance of Kanu’s release, Iwuanyanwu explained that it would bring about a much-needed sense of belonging among the Igbo people. He emphasized that Kanu is a freedom fighter who has not committed any crimes deserving of his continued detention.

During the event, Mrs. Kate Oguocha, the newly-inaugurated FCT Chairperson of Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Women Wing), outlined her agenda. She emphasized the importance of mobilizing and organizing Igbo women to actively support the government in delivering good governance and empowering women. Mrs. Oguocha also stressed the need for preserving the Igbo language, highlighting its cultural significance.

The release of Nnamdi Kanu, according to the leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, would not only promote peace and security in the Southeast region but also foster a renewed sense of unity and purpose among the Igbo people. It is their belief that his freedom is a critical step towards achieving lasting stability and progress in the area.
