Commission”s Chairman Musiliu Smith and Inspector General of Police Usman Baba
The Joint Trade Union Congress of the Police Service Commission has issued an indefinite strike notice to the commission’s management for breach of agreement.
The union noted that the strike will begin from Monday, August 29, 2022.
The notice comes amid a disagreement between commission workers, commission chairman Musiliu Smith and Inspector General of Police Usman Baba over which body should be responsible for recruiting, promoting and appointing officers and officers.
He pointed out that the IGP and other police chiefs in collusion with the president of the PSC, have disavowed the constitutional duty of the PSC.
Adoyi added that the PGI has allegedly been tasked with carrying out the functions of the PSC in flagrant breach of Nigeria’s constitution, a verdict of the Court of Appeal and PSC authorities.
Adoyi said: “We embarked on an indefinite strike starting monday, August 29 to show how unhappy with the way the PSC is being led by the chairman of the commission and the blatant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC for the OIG, Usman Baba.
“The duties of the PSC are detailed in the constitution, but the IGP has ignored all that and taken over the duties of the commission. He appoints and promotes at will in opposition to what is stated in the constitution.
“According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion and recruitment of police officers and officers are the prerogative of the PSC, not the PGI.”
